Domestic Violence affects 1 in 4 women in Northern Ireland. Someone should do something about it.
WHY DON'T YOU?
Volunteer with Women's Aid Helpline.
Women's Aid rely on volunteers to run their vital services. There are a number of areas in which you can volunteer your time. You might want to work with children in the refuge or aftercare groups, or answer the telephone in a local centre. Whichever you decide, will be of great value to the women and children who are experiencing domestic violence.
The Helpline
Northern Ireland Women's Aid Federation operates a 24 hour domestic violence helpline.
The Helpline offers advice, support and crisis intervention to any woman who requires it and will often provide the first opportunity for a woman to talk about what has and is happening to her. The Helpline also provides information to families, as well as statutory and voluntary agencies.
We require volunteers to work in shifts between 10.00am and 10.00pm, Monday to Sunday. The Helpline is in Belfast.
Helpline volunteers will be responsible for providing direct information, support and crisis intervention to:

abused women seeking assistance
*
statutory and voluntary agencies requiring information.
What is expected of me?
As a Helpline volunteer you will need to have:
*
The ability to convey warmth and care over the telephone, to be non-judgemental and support women in whatever decision they make.
*
A commitment to the organisation and the work we do. You must also ask yourself if you have the time to offer a regular commitment, even if only a few hours.
What should I expect in return?
*
You will be fully trained in a number of areas, but especially telephone skills, as well as the self-help ethos of Women's Aid.
*
You will receive ongoing support through group and individual sessions and whenever you require it.
*
You will be doing something worthwhile by providing a service that research has shown is much needed.
*
It will provide you with the chance to gain experience in this area, which may help to open up other opportunities in the future. Hopefully, you will also develop new friendships and interests.
