Job Description:
Specialist Conversation Groups
The aim of Speechmatters Conversation Groups is to bring together adults who have aphasia and promote interaction and communication in a relaxed, supportive social setting.
The Conversation Groups are unique in Northern Ireland as they are organised and run by professional speech and language therapists with input from our home liaison counsellor. Trained assistants and volunteers act as facilitators within the group.
Group members' language abilities range from those with limited speech to those with minimal difficulties. The age range of clients also varies. Group size and programme content varies accordingly.
Referral to the group can be made by contacting Speechmatters. An open referral system is in operation. The groups which cater for up to 15 people are available at a growing number of locations throughout Northern Ireland.
Currently groups are available in:
* Belfast
* Bangor
* Coleraine
* Ballymena
* Cookstown
* Lisburn
* Lurgan
Benefits include:
* A forum where members can practise and improve conversational skills according to individual ability
* A group where members are actively encouraged to express their views on issues concerning their well being
* A place to meet other individuals who have become aphasic and benefit from their support and mutual understanding
* Access to Speechmatters counselling service
* Involvement in planning and evaluation of the service
* Day support which is tailored to meet the needs of individuals and which can provide flexible respite and support for carers
