News about Victim Support

- Posted on May 20, 2008

Crime can have serious consequences for its victims, who can find it difficult to recover and move on. Victim Support helps victims come to terms with the impact of crime, deal with practicalities and cope with crimes longer-term implications, by supporting witnesses at court. Three service strands help victims to recover.

Community Service Our service is independent, confidential and free and local volunteers offer crime victims support and practical help. After training, volunteers have the skills to listen and provide victims with reassurance that they are not alone. They help them explore and come to terms with their feelings. Volunteers can also put victims in touch with other supportive organisations.

Criminal Injuries Compensation Service Our volunteers help with Criminal Injury Compensation Claims, insurance issues and other practical matters associated with crime administration.

Courtsˇ¦ Witness Service Courts Witness Volunteers help before, during and after trials. They talk and listen to witnesses, without prejudicing their case ; familiarise them with Court procedures and layout; provide a safe, supportive waiting area; accompany witnesses to the Court room; provide practical help (e.g. with expense forms) and offer access to people with information about the case.

The Benefits Older and retired volunteers enhance their knowledge of life with professional counselling skills. Students and other younger volunteers gain new skills and invaluable career and life experience. Volunteers with the Court Witness Service become familiar with Court layout, facilities, procedures and personnel; receive quality-assured Court Witness Training and come to understand the experiences and outlook of witnesses.
