This training course is organised as part of a national 'Walking the Way to Health' initiative which has been developed within the Southern Area since 2001. The aim of the training course is to equip adults with the necessary skills and knowledge to set up local walking for health programmes; lead safe and enjoyable walks for people of all ages and abilities; promote the health benefits of walking and motivate people to take up walking. On completion of this training participants will be eligible to receive free insurance cover to lead a health walks programme anywhere within the UK. Walk leaders will also be registered on a database, receive support in establishing their group and be eligible to attend their local walking forum. www.promotingwellbeing.info/walking
Boccia Leaders Level 1 Award
This accredited CP Sport Boccia Leader Level 1 training course will provide staff and volunteers with knowledge and practical skills to lead a game of Boccia (seated bowls) with older people or adults with limited mobility. This is a game which can be adapted for all ability levels and has proved very popular with those trained to date.
Moving to Music - Chair Based Exercise - Level 1
This 2 day training course is designed for staff and volunteers who work with older people, people with a disability or adults within residential, nursing home, day care or community settings. The training will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to facilitate appropriate safe and effective chair based activity sessions for people with limited mobility in order to enhance their quality of life. On completion of this training course participants will receive an OCN level qualification.
Leading Creative Movement and Dance with Older People
This 21/2 day training course provides basic skills in leading a creative dance and movement session. The course would be particularly suitable to staff or volunteers working with older people or people with a disability in a community or day care setting. On completion of this training course participants will receive an OCN level 2 qualification.
Cycle Leader Training
The Cycling for Health Initiative aims to support and encourage those who are least active to become more active for the benefit of their health. The Cycle Leader course is delivered over 2 days by the Tricycle organisation. On completion of the course leaders will be trained to National Standard Level 2.
The aim of the course is to train Volunteer Cycle Leaders to set up and lead on local cycle rides in association with their group/organisation/workplace. Up to 16 bicycles are available assessed for groups to use which are held in Newry, Armagh and Craigavon. Applicants should be confident cyclists, have good communication skills and be interested in promoting cycling for health within their group/organisation/workplace
BReaK iT DoWN - Facilitating an introduction to Street Dance OCN Level 2
BReaK iT DoWN has been developed by the SHSCT in recognition of the positive role dance can play in increasing the levels of physical activity of young people in a fun and creative way. BReaK iT DoWN has been designed to introduce you to street dance skills, techniques and methods. On completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and confidence to facilitate an 8 week programme of introduction to street dance with your own group/s. On the BReaK iT DoWN course you will learn how to warm-up and cool down safely, introduce to basic street dance movements and sequences. You will also learn how to structure your dance workshops to suit the needs of your own group.
